Hello everyone!
We have put in many hours, funds and dedication to bring you new and exciting changes to the The Design Layer!
First, our column will step out of the box that is Vectorworks, Vision and associated applications, and expand to all things Pre-Production, Programming and Design.
We feel this will allow for the many questions we get about other topics to finally be answered, and also get our column out to more of you in the design world!
On top of the task of more than doubling the ability of the column, we also added new Education & Pre-Production Services that will be available today and in the near future through The Design Layer!
We have renovated and rebuilt the upper level of TLS Productions, Inc.'s headquarters in Ann Arbor, MI into what we are calling “The Studio.”
It includes a dedicated classroom area, a full kitchenette, a media lounge and a state-of-the-art programming/engineering area with all of the major drafting, engineering, programming and visualization software.
We also will be making the back area of our shop into "The Annex," a full-service rehearsal space.
I would like to thank each and every one of you for your patience while we made these changes, and we hope The Design Layer can assist you further in your designs & productions!

Question:
"When I am setting up a network with my QLab machine & my phone running QLab Remote, I can’t seem to connect to my workspace?"
Answer:
There are quite a few reasons this could be happening, but I can run through a few of the usual reasons.
1. Check that your QLab Machine, Wireless Router/Access Point & Remote device all have the same Subnet Mask & Gateway/Router Address.
Based on the Subnet, make sure that each device’s IP address has the same matching octets that are needed (represented by the 255 octets in the subnet) and unique device octet(s) (0’s in the subnet).
Example -
QLab Machine IP address: 192.168.0.101
Remote device IP address: 192.168.0.102
Subnet Mask address: 255.255.255.0
Gateway/Router address: 192.168.0.1
2. Ensure that “Use OSC Controls” is turned on in the OSC Controls window in Workspace Preferences (The menu that pops up after pressing the ⚙️ (gear) icon in the bottom right).
3. If there are any other issues after the two above steps have been checked, send a quick email to Support@Figure53.com and explain your situation. They usually respond within 24 hours, if not 15 minutes!
Question:
"On an [ETC] Ion console, my addresses are showing as absolute, so Universe 2, Address 1, is showing as 513, not 2/1. Is there a way to show the second option as default?"
Answer:
Yes there is, and it’s as simple as pressing one hard key on the desk! Simply press the [Data] key until the proper output address style is selected. Hope this helps!
Question:
"I work at a theatre where we regularly put on musicals and I keep getting feedback in my speakers with my wireless body mics, no matter where the actors are on stage. Is there a secret to removing feedback out of a system?"
Answer:
While there are plenty of tricks to help prevent the feedback, the best one I have found is something called “Frequency Killing” or "Frequency Dampening” - essentially to use a frequency viewing app or tool to track down what frequency is feed backing.
Once you track down the frequency, use a digital EQ (most digital mixers have this built right in) and grab the slider or control point and remove that specific frequency out of the mix.
Once it is gone, feedback should be drastically reduced, if not eliminated. If more than one frequency is causing feedback you can try this over again, but realize the more frequencies you take out of a mix, you will have a loss in the quality of the sound, so mix wisely!
